Digital signage is an effective and cost effective method of marketing made possible by the development of flat screen TV devices such as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and plasma. Because of the flatter design of LCD and plasmas they can be used in a similar way as traditional print media such as posters and bill boards but as digital advertising devices can play moving images it means they are more eye-catching and engaging.

Digital signage is also flexible in that content can be altered remotely and screens can be networked allowing scheduled content to be played throughout different times of the day to match the needs of different promotions or audiences. Digital signage can literally be placed anywhere that traditional print media has been placed. Even outdoor locations are good areas for digital advertising as more people will pass an digital outdoor signage poster or billboard in comparison to one inside a retail unit. Any digital outdoor signage has to be protected from the elements but waterproof LCD enclosures are readily available to do this.

In choosing locations for digital advertising and signage there is only really one rule of thumb and that is should be placed in the most visible location possible. Eye-level is best and in areas of high footfall which makes digital outdoor signage. Digital signage is relatively simple to set up although some technical knowledge is required to create and upload content however, a good rule of thumb is that if you can post a video online you are skilled enough to upload the signage content.

Whether it’s to build your brand, to promote a product or simply to maintain brand awareness, a digital signage is an effective, cost efficient and attractive medium of advertising. Compared to static print, a digital sign tends to grab people’s attention because of our tendency to focus our eyes and attention to something in motion. Another advantage of using digital signage is the ease and flexibility involved in changing the message or the layout as against static print which is more costly.

Using outdoor digital signage poses different challenges to indoor systems, from protecting the device from the elements to getting the content delivered but the benefits of using outdoor LCDs and plasma for digital advertising or information is that you can reach a lot larger audience. There are of course many pitfalls in implementing outdoor digital signage, here are ten ideas to avoid making costly mistakes:

    10. Have a goal – You must have a clear purpose in mind. If you are to invest in digital outdoor signage systems you must have focus on what you want to achieve, more customers or strengthening your brand or perhaps you wish to entertain or inform. Define your expectations before you invest in any system.

    9. Plan for costs – digital signage is never cheap, always plan for everything. It never surprises me to hear of companies that have spent small fortunes on outdoor digital signage systems only to have run out of money for things like maintenance or even content.

    8. Use the right people to manage your project – often digital signage projects get farmed on to IT. Sure there are technical aspects to DooH (Digital out of Home) but it is far more suited to someone with marketing experience. Also ensure you have a clear project leader, there are many aspects to outdoor digital signage and unless someone is in a position to keep all the facets together your project could soon falter as soon as you hit he first obstacle. Ensure you have somebody to manage and update the content – you’d surprised how often this is overlooked.

    7. Position – People can spend huge sums of money on digital signage campaigns but if the LCD, plasmas or LED screens are in the wrong place it could all be money down the tube if nobody pays any attention to it.

    6. Weather protection – Outdoors is a totally different environment than indoors and any signage device will need protecting from the elements. Always ensure good quality plasma or LCD enclosure houses the device. Often European IP 65 or USA NEMA 4 standards are applied for outdoor digital signage enclosures.

    5. Choose the right software and tools – Don’t get distracted with expensive and often overly-complicated content creation tools. Often the simple desktop office tools like PowerPoint will create good quality and innovative content

    4. Testing, testing 1, 2, 3 – Properly test your campaigns ensure. Don’t just test that the devices are working, practice changing content and carrying out general maintenance like cleaning, it is often small practicalities like this that can cause the failure of an outdoor digital signage project.

    3. Be Innovative – Don’t be frightened of trying new things. Look at different types of LCD or plasma enclosures and see which looks best. Try placing the devices in unusual areas or trying new content anything that will hope it get noticed. Often the best digital signage campaigns are the ones where they have been bold in attempting something new or something different.

    2. Security – It is unfortunate I know but it’s the world we live in and despite the falling costs of LCD and plasmas they are still attractive items for thieves. Ensure the device id properly secure from theft but also ensure the LCD enclosure is rugged enough to withstand attacks by vandals.

    1. Content – The most important aspect of any outdoor digital signage campaign by far is content. Content is key, no matter how fancy your digital outdoor signage systems looks if they don’t display interesting, informative or entertaining content they are being wasted. Be innovative and be different. If you are attempting to generate income from advertising then mix in entertainment too, people become advert blind and will simply ignore any messages.

Keep things interesting and mix and match advertising content with more entertainment and informative stuff. Ensure you use plenty of colours, moving images and keep things simple. Too much going on, on the screen, will confuse and distract. Audio works well too but don’t blast out music this can be quite annoying to many people, particularly if they don’t like that genre.

Outdoor digital signage is a great way to expand a companies profile, advertise, increase branding, influence customer behaviour and generate sales but it only works if you invest the time and effort along too with the money.

The latest, and possibly the most effective new advertising and marketing tool since the Internet, is the new medium of digital signage. Also known as electronic signage, this dynamic media, with its Flash technology, massive and not-so-massive display screens, its sharply focused LCD ad player screens, its motion, sound, and color is clearly the future in mass marketing. Narrowcasting networks, LCD-dominated advertising kiosks, electronic billboards, all offer a solution to your point-of-purchase advertising needs, among many other advantages.

With this emerging new marketing medium, of course, come emerging difficulties, including cost issues, return-on-investment (ROI) questions, the adaptability of the technology to various methods of programming, an as-yet-unproven record of success within the advertising and marketing industry, and a plain lack of understanding of the technology and systems involved. This lack of understanding encompasses not only the hardware and software, but installation and programming parameters, as well. Unfortunately, this lack of understanding was often expressed by venders of digital signage technology, as well as users. A lack of interoperability, as well as what’s known as “a complex value chain”, also complicates, sometimes even compromises, the effectiveness of this innovative technology.

Clearly, digital signage, though beyond its initial teething stage, is still in the midst of its inevitable growing pains. Considering the complex technological and broadcasting standards involved with in-store, narrowcasting networks that are designed to provide out-of-home programming, such problems are not surprising. Fortunately, neither are they unsolvable.

Studies, by Arbitron, among others, show that digital signage is an effective tool in prompting customer appreciation, retention, and recall of the information they see when presented as dynamically, and as vividly as it is via electronic signage. Also, smaller scale investment of, for example, one LCD screen in a particular location would cost only some 4-6,000 dollars. The ROI for such an installation would be returned almost immediately.

The development of more open and compatible standards for digital signage is being actively pursued by industry groups like the Point-Of-Purchase Advertising International (POPAI), and the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA). Each of these organizations are working feverishly to relax and ease technical standards in order to facilitate interoperability of the equipment and technology of various different venders.

New enterprises are constantly emerging to confront and to solve all the various technical, mechanical, and operating issues common to any new system. System venders, digital signage service providers (DSSP), and advertising service providers all have lately come into being to help businesses and institutions take full advantage of the marketing potential of digital signage.

Conferences and trade shows are being held more and more frequently, and, in concert with increasingly prevalent Internet-based information, all are instrumental in helping both users and venders better understand and keep abreast of this constantly-evolving digital marketing technology.

Whether it’s suspended from the ceiling of a retail store, positioned near a gate in an airport terminal, or stationed in a hotel lobby, a digital sign has one basic function: to communicate.

Clearly, the types of communication -informational, promotional or advertising-related- are unique and different. What’s the same is the expectation of the person responsible for the digital sign that it will convey a bit of information to its intended audience. All other expectations for the sign -like connecting emotionally with a viewer, branding a store or a product, or promoting a specific product or offer- are built on this single foundation.

However, identifying the core function of a digital sign is quite a bit easier than actually executing that function. Why? Simply stated it is because digital signs exist in a media milieu that inundates, saturates and dominates the comings and goings of the public as it attends to its daily affairs. In other words, a digital sign has to compete with hundreds of other messages bombarding its audience throughout the day, cut through the noise and connect -even for one brief moment- with its audience just to deliver a few bits of information.

Granted, if that information is something a member of the intended audience is seeking out -such as directions or information to confirm what’s going on in a specific conference room- making that connection will be much easier. But if the goal is to promote or advertise a service or product that passersby are only mildly interested in -or even worse- unaware of, making that connection to communicate becomes a more difficult challenge.

Fortunately, the tools and expertise to communicate with text, graphics, animation and video are widely available, relatively affordable and well understood. With 60-plus years of television under the nation’s belt, both those imparting information with video and those receiving that communication have a long track record of communicating via TV.

Without question, digital signs aren’t television, but they’re about as close as one can get to TV without mounting an antenna to a tower and firing up a transmitter. As a result, digital signage communicators can use the common elements digital signs share with television to present their messages in a visual shorthand that anyone who watches TV understands.

It is worth mentioning, however, that the visual shorthand of television is in flux. The old nearly square picture tube that dominated the living rooms of America for the past six decades is giving way to the wider, clearer flat panel display that’s capturing a growing share of the home TV market. In fact, that latest survey from Frank N. Magid Associates finds that 25 percent of U.S. television households now own HDTVs. That’s 28 million dwellings in the United States where television viewing is done on a sharp, wide television screen.

The same survey found that the pace at which younger adults -ages 21 to 34- are buying HDTVs has quickened. It also found 28 percent of those buyers purchased an HDTV to connect the high definition set to a game console, such as a Sony PlayStation 3 or Microsoft Xbox 360.

The growth of U.S. HDTV households in general and the significant number of younger adults connecting them to a game console speaks to other side of the digital signage expectation equation: specifically what the digital signage audience expects.

Those responsible for digital signage content must take into account that their audience is developing an increasingly sophisticated visual appetite. Where standard definition video was once the cost of admission into the video game, high definition video will soon become the base line. Where organization of content on a relatively square, relatively low-resolution screen dominated TV, digital signage content increasingly will be organized into zones on a high-resolution, rectangular screen.

And finally, where rather artificial representations of reality once dominated TV animation, true-to-life-looking animated elements are quickly becoming the norm. Given the Magid finding related to how many young adults are buying HDTVs to connect to a game console coupled with the stunning, life-like animation that’s common in video games like Madden NFL 08 from EA Sports, it’s clear the bar is being raised dramatically.

None of this is to say that digital signage content producers must hirer teams of digital cinematographers and 3-D artists. Rather, it’s only a reminder of where the visual tastes of digital signage audiences in this country are headed. Keeping the viewer’s expectations foremost in mind while creating digital signage content is the first step to realizing the only reasonable expectation a digital signage user can have: namely, to communicate.

When I think about digital signage, I’m sometimes reminded of the perpetually hungry, ever-growing plant from the musical “Little Shop of Horrors.” You might remember that unusual flora. It’s the talking, singing Venus Flytrap on steroids that constantly demands “Feed Me!” I can’t help but think of that giant man-eating plant, because its appetite for flesh was as large and insatiable as that of digital signage for content. Content is the currency of digital signage. Without it, digital signage would be about as appealing as looking at a dimly lit mirror. So, it’s imperative that digital signage users source, create and schedule enough of the right kinds of content to attract and hold the interest of their audiences till they’ve delivered their intended message.

Not an easy task under normal conditions, the job is even harder when high definition is added to the equation. The appeal of HD content on a digital sign is straightforward. High definition television’s ability to reproduce enough picture detail to convey a previously unattainable sense of realism is powerful. Sports fans who watch their favorite teams in HD never want to go back to their ordinary TVs, and nature buffs who tune into Discovery HD Theater can feel overwhelmed at times by the Mother Nature’s majesty.

Transplant that HD realism to a retail digital signage network, for example, where marketers want to create a specific mood or portray their merchandise in the best possible light. Under those circumstances, understanding the allure of high definition to digital signage marketers is as clear as an HD image itself.

However, the issue of sourcing HD content -particularly video originated in high definition- is significantly less clear. While it seems that every week another press announcement trumpets the arrival of a new TV channel or cable network in HD, the reality is the video production industry is still in a transition period between conventional television and HDTV. HD content can be shot for your digital signage needs, but there is a strong demand for HD production services and limited supply -so be prepared. On a positive note, those content creators who wish to shoot their own HD digital signage content have a broad selection of relatively affordable camcorders from which to choose.

Another source of HD content is your company’s film library. Remember continuous-tone film is a high-resolution -or at the risk of confusing things “high definition”- medium. Film can be transferred to HD video, and depending on your project, doing so might make sense.

Upconverting standard definition television to HDTV is an option as well. Depending on how you intend to use the content, this may be an entirely suitable solution for your HD content needs. While it may not be ideal, upconverting select content has significant advantages over shooting original HD material in terms of cost, speed and opportunity. Remember, many programs you’re ooing and ahhing at today on your HDTV may include sequences that have been upconverted from standard definition footage. That’s especially likely to be the case for historical file footage.

If you’re not looking for original HD content, you’re options are a little broader. Cable, satellite, and even Telco TV services make a variety of channels and networks available in high definition. It is even possible to turn a computer with a USB 2.0 port and a USB device that’s an ATSC tuner along with a loop antenna into an HD receiver/digital video recorder for terrestrial (over-the-air) broadcast HDTV content. While I specifically am not advocating unauthorized use of copyrighted material, the availability of the USB HDTV tuner and recorder does increase your flexibility and options.

Feeding digital signage’s insatiable appetite for content has never been easy, and HD makes the task even more troublesome. But you are not without options. Originating HD content, transferring existing film assets to HD and upconverting ordinary video content to high definition are starting points. With time, HD production capabilities will become so prevalent that creating high definition content will be taken for granted. Until that time point, creative digital signage content pros will assess their resources and employ the options that make sense today.

A new trend in digital signage is emerging that combines the strength of digital signs with the interactivity of digital kiosks. For many areas, such as retail shops, the sum of the two holds greater potential for marketers than either of the individual parts.

Known in some circles as hybrid digital signs and by others as interactive digital signage, these combo systems can capture the attention of those nearby by playing back compelling linear content -for example an enticing commercial or news feed- and immediately switching to an interactive mode when triggered by an external input, such as the touch of a viewer, the mere presence of a passerby or even environmental conditions.

Like a standalone digital sign, a hybrid system allows communicators to playback a pre-built sequence of elements, including video files, graphics, text, animation and live television. Those staples of digital signage are the makings of an effective message that entices interaction with the very flat panel on which the content plays.

Once viewers touch the panel or step within its proximity, the hybrid sign automatically interrupts linear content playback and displays a digital kiosk-like interface that lets a shopper touch hot spots on the screen, launching a pre-built interactive branching presentation. Navigating through the presentation, shoppers can find the information they want like product recommendations, pricing and availability.

Depending upon the level of sophistication needed, such hybrid interactive presentations can link to company’s servers, pulling information needed for the presentation and collecting information about the consumer that can be stored on the server.

For instance, a hybrid system at an automotive retailer could send an inquiry to the store’s server to access a database of recommended filters and oil viscosity specified by each car manufacturer. Matching information the customer entered about his car with the recommendations in the database, the system could check inventory for the right products, retrieve availability and pricing and present the information to the shopper standing at the hybrid sign.

Prior to offering that information, the system could ask the shopper to enter his name and address and to grant permission to be notified of future specials. With that data saved on the server, the retailer’s marketing department can automatically send out coupons for oil and filters when next estimated time for an oil change rolls around.

What enticed the shopper to touch the screen in the first place? Perhaps it was a video playing back in linear digital signage mode of a favorite racecar driver discussing why it’s important to stay current on oil changes.

On the front end of customer interaction, the hybrid system cast a wide net, cycling through a playlist of content designed to sell oil, followed by tires, then batteries, air filters -the list goes on an on. Each linear segment is backed up by an interactive kiosk component that’s triggered when a shopper’s curiosity is piqued by one of these linear presentations and touches the screen. On the back end, the system uses data that’s collected to stay in touch with shoppers once they leave the store, offering special incentives to have them return. In essence, hybrid digital signage can help to extend the marketing reach of a retailer well beyond arm’s length from the display panel and into the homes of shoppers who are willing to interact.

Interactivity doesn’t haven’t to begin with a human touch either. Imagine a hybrid digital signage system in a ski shop at the base of mountain. Skiers donning their boots and gloves might see a digital sign in passing as it plays back linear content; however, their attention might be focused when temperature, wind and solar sensors at the top of the mountain report conditions and trigger specific presentations. Lots of sun could call up reminders about needing sun screen. Heavy snow might trigger another presentation that makes them think twice about leaving the store before having the right gloves or goggles.

The possibilities for interactive, hybrid digital signage are only as limited as the imagination of creative marketers. To be sure, this aspect of the digital signage market is in its infancy. However, with the recent availability of the hardware and software needed to bring together the separate worlds of kiosks and digital signage, hybrid systems will certainly play an important roll in the unfolding digital signage market.

Whether your goal is to turn shoppers into buyers, entertain the masses, promote your brand or run SMS competitions, digital signage offers unique advantages over traditional signage. Simply put, digital signage is an electronic display device which can be used both in and outdoors and is capable of displaying customised, constantly changing high-quality video, graphics, text and sound. It is a dynamic communication tool that has allowed many companies to enhance their marketing messages, target key customers and enjoy successful results.

Having the advantage of being able to simultaneously provide moving images, still images, scrolling text and music, digital signage can make an impact, attract attention and persuade customers’ to take action. This is all achieved through the use of display devices which constantly project targeted marketing messages for audiences to receive. The display devices used in digital signage systems include Plasma Display Panels (PDP’s), liquid crystal display monitors (LCD’s), cathode ray tube monitors (CRT’s), normal televisions, projection display screens, scrolling LED message boards and stand alone kiosks with touch screens for interactivity. You only need look in your local supermarket, restaurant, train station, bar or retail store to see just how useful and popular digital signage has become.

Digital signage is referred to by a number of different names – captive audience networks, electronic display networks, digital dynamic signage, narrowcasting, data casting, digital in-store merchandising, employee TV, out-of-home media networks, retail TV, digital media networks, electronic billboards – whatever you choose to call it, there is absolutely no denying the benefits it can have for business.

By far the key benefit of using digital signage would be its rapid ability to change and update content to deliver specific messages to specific audiences in specific locations. Unlike traditional paper signage, digital signage can be delivered within seconds of being created. Time and expense can be saved on printing, packaging, distribution, shipping, unpacking and mounting – being able to update, change or completely replace a marketing or sales message on-the-fly without replacing physical collateral can save businesses time, money and personnel hours, not to mention increasing advertising and marketing exposure. Digital signage is helping to merge the industries of advertising networks and point of purchase display merchandising. No more preparing briefs three months before they are needed.

The primary goal of any business or organization is to give better customer experience. The intelligent use of technology can help make this goal where establishments can improve the way they interact with customers. Digital signage technology has helped many businesses make their strategic advertising and marketing goals.

Digital signage – an effective and interactive approach to marketing : Digital signage is one of the innovative approaches to marketing. It makes advertising an interactive mission where consumers play an active role. Signage systems are now not just limited to inside stores and outside the entrance. Digital signage allows to display different messages at preset intervals. However, the key to successful displays is to make them as interactive as possible. Some stores use QR codes on the display, which customers can scan with their mobile devices and avail of discounts, coupons, and other special offers. Some systems make use of GPS technology to send messages to GPS-enabled devices. In such cases, users gets alerts on the latest deals and offers, even when they are within several feet of a store’s digital display.

  10. Digital signage has become a common sight. Many businesses now use this flexible and dynamic medium to advertise, promote and raise brand awareness, and its use has penetrated both the indoor and outdoor advertising sectors. However, indoor signage screens and outdoor digital signage are two separate entities and there is very little in the way of cross-over between the two.

Yes, both use either LCD or plasma displays out of home, but this is where the similarities between indoor digital signage and outdoor systems, differ.

Content and screen type that may work well in an indoor environment may not be suitable for outdoor digital signage and vice versa. Indoor displays, for instance, are designed for certain light conditions, temperature. Whilst an outdoor screen needs to be water proof, rugged and able to operate in various weather types and temperature.

The biggest enemy of an outdoor sign is the sun. The sun’s brightness can counteract the brightness of the screen so the outdoor digital signage becomes faded and difficult to read. For this reason, any screen placed in an outdoor location has to be high brightness. Normally, with standard LCD screens the backlight will produce somewhere in the region of 500-800 candela, but an outdoor screen can go much brighter: 1200-2000 candela.

But the problems caused by the sun don’t stop there. The sun can cause glare, reflecting off the screen making it unreadable. To counter this, anti-glare glass can be used but this will diminish the brightness of the TV. Another solution for outdoor TVs is to place them away from the sun or in a canopy, thus preventing glare. This is not always practical so a combination of high brightness screen and anti-reflective glass are used.

The most obvious challenge with placing a screen in an outdoor location is the weather. Rainfall is perhaps the common but an outdoor screen has to prevent all sorts of weather elements from damaging the screen. Snow, sleet and even airborne dust also have the potential to disable a screen so the digital signage enclosure or screen itself must be protected from the elements.

The two standards to watch out for when buying an outdoor TV or a protective LCD enclosure are the IP65 (in Europe) and (NEMA 4) in the USA. Hardware built to these standards should be protected from the weather – no matter what it throws at the screen.

Temperature is another concern for any outdoor digital signage device. Most TV systems are designed to operate at room temperature and even commercial grade screens that have a larger operating window are not equipped for the extremes in temperature that an outdoor screen has to cope with.

In some locations temperatures can drop well below freezing in the winter and yet become stifling hot in the summer months – and the outdoor digital signage will have to be able to not only endure both of these levels, but also have to operate in them.

Insulation, cooling fans, heaters and even air conditioning has to be considered in some locations to ensure the screen is kept at the optimum or you may have to replace the screen.

Another problem that is not unique to outdoor digital signage but is certainly more of a problem in unmanned areas is vandalism. Smashed screens, graffiti and other forms of damage has a double whammy in that the screen is not earning money when it is disabled and if it has to be replaced the added cost will make any return on investment harder to achieve.

Another factor to consider when planning an outdoor digital signage campaign is the life cycle of the LCD or plasma screen. All TVs, whether commercial or standard, will only have a finite lifespan. Keeping the screen in optimum conditions will prolong the life cycle but with the screen on permanently and in less than a perfect environment and the life cycle will be a lot less.

LCD enclosures are an ideal solution for protecting screens in outdoor digital signage. They are not just cabinets to house LCD screens but provide the perfect operating environment for screens, both commercial and standard. Containing all the necessary climatic systems for cooling and heating and manufactured to waterproof IP65 from stainless steel they provide the perfect environment that will protected from all the above elements. And as they provide a perfect working environment they will prolong the lifecycle of the device too.

  11. Screens used for advertising, branding, promotion and information are now a common sight in a myriad of locations. Few people will fail to notice the number of screens in their local shopping mall, subway or even around town as outdoor digital signage is becoming common too.

There is, however, a big difference between indoor and digital outdoor signage – not just in their locations, with advantages and disadvantages to both systems.

Indoor signage is the most common from of out of home screen advertising. Nearly every shopping mall and large retailer has screens dotted around. The great advantage is that this from of digital signage has a targeted audience – the shoppers, who are already in the store or mall, and willing to spend money. However, this is not the case with digital outdoor signage as people walking along the high street are not all shoppers so the audience is less targeted.

This can be an advantage ion itself though. For an indoor screen advertising in a retail store, the only people who get to see the display are already customers as they are inside shopping; however, with digital outdoor signage, every person the content persuades to visit the store, is a new customer – somebody who would not have visited otherwise.

Outdoor digital signage also has advantages over indoor screens in that there is less advertising clutter. In a mall or indoor location, other signs, advertisements and promotional material will distract from the display, but outdoors there is less of this making the screen more noticeable.

The dwell time with digital outdoor signage, however, is less than for an indoor screen. Inside people may view the screen for four or five seconds but with digital outdoor signage this drops to just above a second so any content has to carry all the important information and make an impact in that time.

  12. From digital posters and digital menu boards we have all been familiar with electronic menu’s displaying tempting items for lunch and dinner, now with the advancement of the signage hardware more and more installations are branching out into what were previously un-chartered waters.

Now if you were to put a standard indoor kiosk outdoors it would not last long at all as soon as there was a down poor of rain or a frustrated youth. This is why there is a need to protect outdoor digital signage, should any of the hardware get damaged the advertising campaigns are dead.

    So what are the options?

There are specifically manufactured outdoor kiosks these offer protection from the weather with waterproof and weatherproof seals preventing any water or sand ingress. Image the hassle if any sand got into the hardware. However these come at a price.

There is another option and that is to use a standard commercial grade LCD display along with a media player and fit them into a protective case, this case can be manufactured to look like other kiosks with cable access in the base and even to include a touch screen capabilities, this options is much more affordable however it does offer the same protection as a dedicated outdoor kiosk.

Now you can even do this even cheaper with an LCD advertising screen, these have a built in media player so updates are through a USB connection in the screen. Mount it into a protective enclosure and you have the same outdoor protection for less than $1500 not bad value for a 42″ outdoor digital sign.

This is one sure way of creating a digital signage network to a very tight budget and then as the revenue streams increase with the demand for customers to put their ads on your network you can replace these with branded kiosks adding more credibility to your organization.

Outdoor electronic signage will certainly follow the trends associated with indoor signage and will certainly be sprouting up in even more obscure locations. No matter what the size of your budget or campaign, there is a signage solution for you and your budget.

  13. There is a vast array of different designs and options available for those who wish to purchase LED signage. However for the purposes of this article it is convenient to make a single broad distinction between the various types of LED displays, and class them as being designed for either indoor or outdoor use. Many of the same technological and design principles apply to both of these types of LED signs, but there are of course some important differences.

Firstly one of the major differences between indoor and outdoor signage relates to size. While indoor LED displays tend to be relatively small, outdoor signs are essentially unlimited in terms of size. This works both ways in fact, as many LED outdoor signs can be no bigger than ticker boards, while others can take up the sides of entire buildings. This is of course one of the great advantages of LED signage, as the technology can easily be adapted to signs of any scale. The LEDs themselves come in a range of sizes, which is of course essential for sharp and distinct images. The sizes of the LEDs that will be used in any LED display signage are of course determined by the size of the display itself. Small displays will require smaller LEDs, to allow for symbols and images to be clearly constructed. Of course it would also be possible to create a large outdoor LED billboard using only very small LEDs, but this would be both impractical and unnecessary.

The majority of LED display billboards and large outdoor LED signs are made from a number of LED display panels assembled to form a larger panel. This makes customization relatively straightforward, and allows for very large outdoor LED billboards to be built.

Of course any signage that is designed to be installed outdoors must be weatherproof and storm resistant. This is especially true for illuminated signage, which generally depends on electricity to function. LED outdoor signs should therefore be tested extensively before being distributed to consumers. For example they should be subjected to widely varying temperatures, to ensure that they will function correctly at both extremes of the temperature scale. They should also be subjected to shock tests, to ensure that they will not be damaged by winds and other environmental factors. While indoor signage must also be tested carefully, generally it will not be necessary to test products to such extremes.

  14. Let’s first consider the low-hanging fruit that makes dynamic menu boards so effective for restaurants. According to Nielsen’s third-quarter (2013) Digital Place-Based Video Report, ad recall for POS-type digital signage is typically in the 60% range, which is more than twice the average recall of static signs-menus or otherwise.

This is the reason you can so easily recall the rich color of a creamed latte topped with cinnamon spice at your local coffee shop. Or, depending on where you dine, maybe you can easily recall dynamic advertising for the most awesome, juiciest pub burger that can fit in the mouth of man. I saw such an ad not long ago and it just keeps playing in my memory like a favorite song.

Such recall makes it a natural choice for promoting those more seasonable and profitable food items at the right time and place. According to a Networld Media Group report, Digital Menu Boards and ROI, the average sales lift of any digitally promoted item on menu boards averages around 3-5%, which means that payoff for such a system most often occurs in one year or less.

The restaurant market definitely benefits from digital signage, although the possibilities only start with ROI and grow from there. Improving the customer experience is also about a return on objectives (ROO). Case in point: Medicine Eat Station in San Francisco. This upscale downtown tofu shop is using digital signage for ambience. The integrated sign system creates the atmospherics of “living in harmony with nature” that is accentuated by 4 vertically rotated 42″ plasma panels built into the wall of the eating gallery. To accomplish this, high-definition video footage of the Rocky Mountain landscape is used for real-time imagery. The programming lasts for about an hour before it repeats. At first glance, it appears to be a still image. But wait, this is real-time imagery, meaning that the clouds slowly cross the screen. A 4,000-year-old Bristle Cone Pine occasionally wavers in the Rocky wind. Light and shadows change constantly, as if you are really there.

This is a great example of ROO, but unfortunately digital signage used as a canvas for art really hasn’t caught on yet. It is by no accident that Medicine Eat Station built this to look like one giant window. It is very cool to experience, meaning that it adds to the purpose of customer satisfaction, just like ambient music, lighting, colors, etc.

Money managers are already pounding their fists, shouting, “Where’s the ROI!” Of course, it’s possible to occasionally slip in an advertisement on the example above, but this might be detrimental to the return on objectives and may compromise the result. Digital signage is not just about sales lift; it’s also about creating a return on objectives. ROO creates a value that cannot be counted in terms of dollars and cents directly. However, ROO leveraged wisely does produce ROI.

Many more POS digital signage opportunities are possible for food and beverage venues. Imagine if you will these scenarios:

A sports bar with digital screens showing “this week’s sports highlights” via pictures, video replays, etc., is a natural place to present promotions to a viewing audience already buying food and beverage. This kind of content adds to customer satisfaction and experience and is available through readily available prepackaged syndication.

Engage patrons with an on-screen sports trivia experience (or any other trivia for that matter) that encourages participation by offering a coupon for the right answer. This can be done by using a QR code to facilitate the “answer” to the on-screen question.

In a QSR setting people are often interested in news, sports, and weather. These interests can be satisfied with existing TV programming and mixed with on-screen ticker announcements, such as today’s special, menu promotions, seasonal sales, etc.

How about a trendy restaurant that displays works from local artist. The LCD monitors hang on the wall with picture frames wrapping them. Maybe patrons vote on the best art. Owners could join forces with local art schools, art societies, and public support groups. Ultimately, this could tie-in to customer satisfaction and experience. Who is not uplifted by good art, and for that matter, good food?

In downtown districts, many restaurants depend on people walking buy. Instead of using posters turning yellow on windows, why not project clear and crisp digital images directly on the window! The technology exists but hardly anyone uses it. The projector cost is about the same as a large LCD screen, although projector bulb replacement would add to maintenance costs. If that’s a major concern, then laser projectors are an alternative with much longer maintenance cycles. These images could be today’s menu special, happy hour enticements, a new menu item that you can almost taste, a soothing cup of fresh ground coffee on a chilly morning, or just good old branding that reinforces quality services, etc.

Now let’s turn to the nightclub scene where people are hopping and bopping on the dance floor. Bizarre curved screens are splashed like clouds above them with computer-controlled graphics flashing to the beat. During breaks, projectors are switched over to digital signage where various branding and POS offers are made.

  15. Digital signage solutions are forms of advertising that will allow you to deliver highly targeted information and interactive messages to your audience. It is also the best way to promote your company or brand without burning a hole in your pocket. Digital solutions are being exploited everywhere, and you can see different forms of it wherever you go. This article will help you learn more about the two different types of digital signage solutions, including the benefits that you can get from each of them.

Signage HD Pro : This is a very simple type of digital signage solution which are often used at restaurants, conference centers, and airports. Signage HD Pro is also one of the most affordable digital solutions that you can get, and this will help you display all the information that you want to deliver to your audience.

Signage HD Pro is a digital solution that is being managed with the help of a TCP/IP network, allowing you to remotely manage the messages on your board. It will also allow you to display videos, and high definition graphics, allowing you to deliver a more compelling form of advertising that interacts with your audience.

In order for you to use the TCP/IP network properly; you can install add-ons such as mouse, keyboard, and touch screens to help you deliver more interactive information. A lot of people choose Signage HD Pro due to its price, and accessibility.

Video Wall Solution : This is a form of digital signage solutions that will allow you to display high quality videos, live streaming and high quality presentations to your audience using multiple monitors at the same time. This is preferred by people who would like to reach a wider range of audience, making their advertising more productive and effective.

Installing and managing Video Wall Solution is very easy, and with the help of signage software, you will be able to play with your digital signage solutions with ease. As a matter of fact, there are programs that are designed to help amateurs to easily use the digital solutions that they have.

These are the two types of digital solutions that you can use for your business. Always remember that both of these digital solutions will help you promote your company or brand. Your choice will depend on the scale of advertising that you want to make, and the needs of your business when it comes to digital signage solutions.

  16. Electronic signage is any type of sign, which is commonly used for the purposes of company branding, advertising or information broadcasting-that uses an illuminated media unit for its display. Fluorescent, neon, and high intensity display modules are all examples of this particular type of display. Billboards which often use top lit lamps for lightning or back-lit menu board’s which are commonly used in many restaurants are not electronic digital signs, there is also a very important sub-category between illuminate signs that are, nonetheless, static in their submission and those signs that allow very less permanent, modifiable data capabilities. On the other hand Digital signage uses technologies such as the LED, LCD and projection modules to display different form of content such as video, digital images, streaming media, and other relevant information and placed in public areas, transportation systems, stadiums, museums, retail stores, hospitals, restaurants, and corporate buildings etc.

Digital signage displays use advance content management systems and digital media distribution modules which can either be run from personal computers, servers or media hosting providers.

Outside the signage industry, many people amalgamate signage with digital signage. In certain contexts, they may actually mean the very same thing. Yet, if you’re a business proprietor, company executive, or company representative who’s thinking about modern display board applications as a medium of advertisement for your organization, it’s crucial for you to know the key difference between these two. Electronic digital signage is signs that use a digital display unit combined with advance digital technology to generate preeminent control, management, and versatility of the displayed content. This technology allows an organisation to display large size video content, design multiple display boards which could be rotated on a defined schedule, gain important feedback and information about the digital sign’s effectiveness; even incorporate touch screens to create an interactive experience for clients and the other audiences. One should keep in mind, that not all types of hardware support this technology. Fluorescent and other similar neon signs cannot adopt these advance capabilities, whereas LCD and LEDs can.

Digital vs. Electronic Signage : From the viewpoint of a common audience, there might not seem much of a difference between electronic and digital signage. In the context of a basic “static” LCD sign and one that is broadcasting regularly a single digital content, there may not seem any difference at all. That said, beyond all the software capabilities that allow the organizations and companies to manage their required content in a better way, there is still some straight competition between different types of signs. Some of the prominent ones are LCD boards are starting to replace the old school signs in more and more public locations. In some cases, this modern choice may have as much to do with the cultural trends and other hardware capabilities than any benefit that this new system creates. Whereas on the other hand neon signs are already tagged with tacky decorating, when a neighbouring company installs an LED sign, the contrast of the displays are palpable. What’s more, LED is at least six to ten times more energy-efficient than neon displays and is also more compatible with solar power. LED signs are also easier to handle, last longer, and are easier to support and repair.

  17. There are different digital signage systems that you can use for your business, but it depends on the things that your business needs. The problem with a lot of business owners is that they are not aware of the things that they need to consider, and this is the reason why they are not getting the most out of their investment. In this article, we will be discussing the different digital signage systems that you can use for your business. Read on to find the best option that you have, and which of them will give you the best results.

Wired Digital Board : If you are going to use a wired digital board, you need to have a digital media player that will allow you to display the content that you have. There are wired boards that can be connected to a network, allowing you to get better exposure for your business. This is also the most basic type of digital signage that you can use, and will be beneficial for almost all types of business.

Wireless Digital Board : Fixing the wiring you’re your boards could be a hassle for a lot of people, but with the help of wireless digital boards, you will be able to manage your boards without working on the problems that you will encounter. Aside from this, you will also have the ability to configure your digital signage systems without working on the physical aspects and simply implement the things that you want your boards to display and show to your customers.

Outdoor Digital Signage : Getting exposure for your business will help you get better results compared to billboards. With the help of an outdoor digital signage, you will be able to reach more people and be able to promote your business, brand, products, and services to them. This will help other people to understand the things that they can get from becoming a member of your business.

Touch Screen Digital Board : Are you looking for a way to have an edge over your competitors who are also using digital signage systems? Then it would be better for you to get a digital board with touch screen capabilities. This will help you get better interaction with your customers and will help you get better results from your business.

Social Networking Board : The last type of digital signage system that we will be using is the one that has social networking capabilities. This will help you get better interaction and will help you give your customers a way to say something about the business that you have. This will also be beneficial for you if you are going to use it is a freedom board that your customers can use to improve the service that you are offering them.

  18. In this fast progressing age of digital signage, touch screen digital signage have been successful and have been able to mark a prominent presence on the marketing field. Various different configurations for this signage are available. This gives the user the ability to display the information about the company and the product directly to the customer according to their purpose. In this process attendees are not required, and as a result, the cost of employing attendees is cut off.

These units are able to handle different applications and files which come in varied formats. Even flash based files can be programmed within the signage. It can be updated to any possible content in accordance with the company purpose.

Some of the companies are seen to utilize the way the users handle the data and prepare an analysis report of the same.

This analysis report helps one to gather the feedback about the company or any of its products newly launched or even old. This feedback can be used in the interest of the customer as well as in the interest of the company. A company would know which of its product sell better and how they can improve the other products in the category. The customer would have the products ready at hand and order them at any time. This is called acquiring business intelligence but with the help of touch screen signage.

There are different types of touch screen digital signage available. Few of them are quite popular as well, like:

    1. Digital signage with touch screen and TV – High quality sound is provided in this system is mostly in used in the five star hotels and their lobby. People can enjoy two things simultaneously in this type of digital signage. They can browse the internet and they can watch the TV.

    2. One may observe that the signage with touch screen and headsets is used mostly in stores, which sell music. Hundreds of music is uploaded in this type of units. People can listen to a definite music, newly launched CD or DVD and they can listen and then decide to purchase. The sound quality of this type of digital signage is usually quite grand.

    3. Digital signage with touch screen, credit card reader and barcode scanner is mostly used in retail stores. This type of digital signage is utilized in order to improve the experience of self service for the customers. Here, the customer can directly search for the product put the price of the product with the bar code scanner and pay for the overall shopping that is done with their credit card.

One can install digital signage with touch screen as well as with the telephone option, webcam and loudspeaker. The product is an instant eye-catcher. It is effectively designed and put through for attracting customers. Most of the time, it is seen that the bank ATMs use this product with these graphical enhancements and additions, because they can guide the consumer correctly through the entire process of cash handling. Webcam is used for user identification. VoIP is used for the benefit of the user landing in any problem.

  19. There was once a time when companies who wanted to advertise at malls, in buildings or out of doors, they only had a couple of options. They could use traditional options, such as signage created in a shop (of course a variety of materials were available) or billboard type signage. The next thing in the signage world is digital signage, however the only option was with LED lit signs. LED signs allowed business owners to place signage that was easily changed, without having to send someone to change out the actual sign. What’s more, LED signs allowed for messages to be scrolled across the screen and rotating messages to occur. Before long, companies around the world were using this type of signage.

Digital signage has progressed even more over the past several years and you may have noticed that more and more flat screen LCD screens are popping up in stores, in malls and in airports to create more diverse advertising. The great thing about using these types of advertising screens is that not only can a screen show a message, it can also show an actual commercial. Malls use these screens as directories and they are interactive, reacting to touch, allowing for a directory that takes up a much smaller footprint in a place where square footage is at a premium.

The popularity of digital signage increases every month. Some companies even place this type of signage in grocery stores and discount stores at the end of isles to advertise their products. Some show commercials while others are interactive allowing the customer to “learn more” if they are interested in the product. These signs are also used to advertise discounts as well.

The way that companies are advertising to people has changed, especially with the advent of DVRs ensuring that many people simply do not watch commercials at home anymore. Digital signage helps companies to circumvent this problem, ensuring that they get their message out to their customers, one way or another.

With the cost of this type of signage decreasing as the technology grows in popularity, you can expect to see more and more of this type of advertising in malls, stores and airports around the world. In some places you will even see them in outdoor areas, although they still require protection from the elements. Before long digital signage will be the primary way for consumers to reach their customer base.

  20. Modern digital signage (DS) media players do not use typical PC architecture. This is a crucial distinction. A modern DS media player is essentially a media appliance to the Internet. It contains optimized hardware and software to accomplish the task at hand-nothing else.

Of course, today’s choices for digital signage include displays with built-in players referred to as SoC (system on a chip). However, SoC displays cannot be compared fairly to a robust DS media player. SoC-powered displays lack the processing power and software features to take advantage of advanced strategies.

For example, it requires significant CPU power to aggregate and parse data in real time, which is a standard feature on modern players. Additionally, SoC displays typically lack the diverse I/O ports required to capture this data. Not to be negative on SoC-powered displays, they have their purpose, but this article is focused on digital signage networks that require more than a limited out-of-the-box solution.

Here are some additional things to consider when shopping for a new digital signage media player, which will aid you in selecting one that meets your immediate needs as well as provide some built-in “future proofing.”

Check the Connectivity Options of the Media Player : The ports of the media player are important because they connect to the monitor that you will use for digital signs. Avoid players with only VGA or DVI ports, both of which are indicators of old graphic chips with lower resolutions.

Look for standard HDMI ports that will support native HD video at 1920 x 1080 resolutions. Better yet, the best DS media players will support HDMI 2.0, which supports Ultra-HD, commonly called “4K”, and is based on a resolution of 3840 x 2160 @ 60fps.

Even though HDMI will support hi-def audio, it can be useful to have a separate audio port for distributed audio-if that is needed in your design. Either a 3.5mm jack or optical audio works fine for this requirement.

The other important port is for the network connection. Ideal players will have both multi-port Gb-Ethernet and built-in WiFi. If using a wireless connection, look for the newest WiFi standard of 802.11ac, which will get you connected to your content source with the greatest speed, reliability, and security.

It is also useful but not always necessary to have a USB port (V 3.0 preferably). It can be used for offline updates of firmware or even installing a playlist if you want to run the player offline. It can also be used for integrating third-party devices.

If your digital signage network requires some kind of customer engagement, wireless interface support becomes a “nice to have” to a “gotta have.” For example, for seamless integration into a larger campaign, you will want to leverage either Bluetooth, Beacons, NFC, or RS-232 (serial port), any of which may be necessary to handle real-time sensors or smartphone interaction. The best digital signage players come with this support built-in-although applications may require programmed widgets to make it work for specific requirements. This is usually done through an API and is supported by the industry at large.

Check Memory Scalability : Memory type and flexibility is often overlooked when shopping for a digital signage media player, but nothing will kill your media playlist quicker than a lack of available memory. Modern DS media players excel in installations where scalable memory is necessary, often because of the amount of RAM-gobbling high-resolution content used (think 4K).

Since content is downloaded and stored locally in a DS media player, its architecture offers several memory options that are significantly more robust than SoC displays. In fact, it is expandable according to your changing requirements.

However, avoid media players with standard hard disk drives (HDD)! They may cost less, but they break quickly under the harsh environment of a digital signage player. A HDD is the chief cause of failures in the field. Instead, opt for a modern player design that uses a solid-state drive (SSD) or Flash memory that is commonly available and rugged as nails.

Check The Software And Formats Supported : Ideally, a digital signage media player should be able to run all versions of common operating systems, including,

    Windows 10 64bit
    Windows 8.1 64bit
    Windows 7 32bit / 64bit
    Ubuntu 15.10
    Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
    Android 5.1

Any of these platforms will support third-party media engines. However, look for SMIL or HTML5 support, which is the most advanced method for players to source playlists from cloud-based servers. Other methods work as well, like FTP, but this method is old school and limits your playlist options significantly. A new digital signage player with a multi-core CPU will likely support many third-party media playout engines that can be software only or may include hardware. The most reliable media engines that require the lowest CPU power to run will be using SMIL or HTML5 programming.

This is most important when playing high-resolution videos. Since digital signage playlists are designed to match the display’s native resolution, it’s crucial to support the highest resolution possible to prevent the dreaded and ugly pixelation of images on large screens.

The best DS players take advantage of an advanced graphic processor unit (GPU), which dedicate hardware to support MP4, H.264, and H.265 codecs. By saving a tremendous load on the CPU, advanced GPUs provide both glitch-free and reliable ultra-high-resolution playback. Of course, this added hardware support does increase cost, but it also significantly improves the quality of video playout, and in digital signage, this is more important than saving a few dollars. The best digital signage media players will be certified to support Ultra-High Definition (UHD) on HDMI 2.0.

Define the Cooling Requirements : Another important consideration is the location the player will be installed. Certainly mounting it close to the display is often the best route, but no player can tolerate extreme heat and humidity conditions for long periods of time. Because failure in the field is expensive, it’s worth assessing before permanently mounting the player.

Almost all players will include a specification for operating temperature range and humidity. Most will operate well within the specified ranges. The best way to add flexibility to player mounting options is to look for these features, all of which reduce the heat load on the player:

    Mobile chipsets
Solid-state disk (SSD) or Flash memory (no HDD)
Built-in metal cooling fins (instead of fan)
    Fanless design
    Less than 65 (operating) watts

Theft Prevention : Tampering with digital signage players is not typically a major issue, mainly because the player is often mounted near or on the display, which is likely out of reach of Joe Public. However…

If your installation calls for added security, chiefly because the player is within reach, then you will find that the majority of new media players include a Kensington Security Slot. Use it! This universal locking system works well for preventing the majority of thefts.

But if you absolutely need to lock-down your media player, there are many locking screws on the market (e.g. Key-Rex) that will prevent thefts even in the most prone areas.

These are some of the key specifications and factors to be considered when buying the best digital signage media players for your business today. You can likely think of others, too. Now that you are up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies emerging in this dynamic landscape, you can choose one with more confidence!

  21. Digital signage has become a very effective medium for many businesses looking to market, advertise, and communicate to consumers. It’s an investment that many industries, from retail to food, need to consider carefully in order to get the best out of the technology. Businesses need to think about their digital content along with the infrastructure that will deliver that content effectively. Moreover, choosing an electronic signage system has to be based on the functionality, the application, the manageability, and, of course, the budget. One of the more critical components to this system is the digital signage player. How do you choose the right one for your business?

Once you’ve determined the digital content and the infrastructure required to deliver that content, you need to look at the hardware specifications. There are plenty of digital signage players in the market today. The most expensive players are designed for advanced signage systems, which are generally used for large-scale deployments. When you’re looking to use this type of infrastructure, you’ll need a fully integrated electronic signage media player that can be connected to industry standard screens such as LCD displays, billboards, plasma, projectors, and other displays.

You might even want to consider a solid-state player with PC-class performance. This type of technology can allow you to display live HDTV broadcast and use HTML5 for content development. Both are, incidentally, top trends at the Digital Signage Expo this year. This is because live video feeds attract and retain customer attention for longer periods while HTML5 is considered to be one of the best content development tools that can deliver engaging content.

If you’re in the restaurant business, you can now rethink your static menu displays and consider installing digital menu boards for all your stores. You’ll want a player that can connect to your network so that it can be administered remotely thereby eliminating the need to have a dedicated server for each store. Ideally a fan-less model and solid state for greater reliability, and by being able to be central-controlled it reduces management time whilst still allowing your menu boards to display different content in every outlet.

The player is but one of many components in your digital signage system. The main thing to remember before embarking on a selection of electronic signage players is to determine your goals and objectives for the signage project, to define the content, and to decide on the best infrastructure to deliver it to your market. Whether it’s using the latest commercial LCD to stream videos using a player that supports multiple media (e.g., Flash, MPEG 4-1, DivX, AVI, etc.) or adopting state-of-the-art systems that use players designed for scalable and multi-screen options, ensure your investment by considering your choices carefully.
