    Anyone with a finger on the pulse of current events had likely heard murmurings from various parties about our dependence on finite oil supplies and other fossil fuels as well as ways we might over-come this dependency. Others have gone a different route and looked for ways that we might get more oil out of the wells that we already have, to do more with what we already have in other words.

    One of the problems is that most oil and natural gas reservoirs are more extensive horizontally then they are vertically, which means a straight vertical well will expose less surface area of the reservoir for oil to be pulled from. Normally this is not a problem since the oil in the surrounding rock will be pulled toward the well during the extraction process anyway, but wells located in a material with a low permeability matrix can prove problematic in this regard.

    These materials, such as shale, tend to limit the amount of oil that can be gleaned from a single well and may require multiple rigs and wells be drilled to get all of the oil out of the same reservoir, a costly endeavor that lacked a cost-efficient solution until recently. Horizontal drilling is when the drill-bit and string is gradually rotated as it drills so that it curves to the side as it drills into the well, eventually going full on horizontal until it reaches the desired point. This process allows oil-drillers to expose much more ‘surface area’ of the reservoir to their pumps so that they can extract more oil from a reservoir before it becomes unsustainable, especially in reservoirs with a low permeability matrix.

    This process is not new by any means, first developed in 1891 with the advent of flexible shafts to rotate drill bits but it wasn’t very feasible economically. The capability to create horizontal shafts was eclipsed by the fact that oil drillers had no way to pin-point the drill’s path underground without the use of complicated mathematics and constantly pausing the drilling to take new measurements of how far down the drill bit had gone. As you can imagine this is a time-consuming and expensive process that was rarely profitable enough to make it worthwhile until the advent of more modern scanning and imaging technology.

    These days a sensor placed behind the drill bit can provide the drillers with a constant update of the drill’s position and depth, allowing for an easier time in digging a horizontal well where it needs to be placed in order to expose as much of an oil reservoir as the well can to digging. Even still a horizontal well can be much more expensive and time consuming to dig compared to a vertical well and as such the latter is still the preferred method of drilling for oil and natural gas when both types of wells will provide equal results; considering a horizontal well can cost upwards of three hundred percent as much as a vertical well, this is typically the correct choice as well.

    So why would anyone construct a horizontal well in the first place? It all comes back to the low permeability of certain types of stone that can be found surrounding and inside of an oil reservoir which can make vertical drilling less profitable. In these situations a horizontal well will still be more expensive then a vertical one but it will also allow greater access to the reservoir itself and thus allow for more oil or natural gas to be gathered.

    Horizontal drilling in Dubai can also help to ‘vent’ pressure and dangerous build ups of gas within oil reservoirs to make it safer for diggers to work and, finally, this digging method can allow oil platforms and rigs to be spaced out over a larger distance while still tapping into the same reservoir. While it’s not right for every situation, modernized horizontal digging can allow oil companies to draw from otherwise unprofitable reservoirs and extract more oil then they otherwise could.
