MEP stands for “Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing,” a type of engineering companies in Dubai which focuses on the disciplines needed to build safe, working structures for human use and occupation. The mechanical aspect focuses on heating, cooling and ventilation, and the electrical aspect focuses on providing power to all outlets and appliances. The plumbing aspect focuses on the delivery of water and the draining of waste water. The mechanical part of MEP is also known as HVAC. It is responsible for the installation and maintenance of air conditioning, heating and ventilation, meaning changing filters and installing furnaces, along with air conditioners. When necessary, it also handles tasks such as smoke control and exhaust The electrical part is responsible not only for outlets and appliances but also lighting, switches, fire alarms, security systems, as well as lightning protection when necessary. The plumbing part also handles fire suppression systems and storm pipe systems, as well as gas delivery systems in medical and laboratory settings.

Of late, the construction industry has been dealing with issues such as over-budget projects, declining productivity and failing to meet delivery dates. As economies stall around the world, builders continue to demand better buildings delivered within budget and on time. Architects, engineers and MEP contractors are thus constantly striving for newer ways to improve productivity, lower costs and streamline the building design and delivery process. BIM which is an information-rich technology that allows the digital representation of building projects simulating the design, planning, construction and operation of a facility has instilled a hope to minimize these issues to a large extent.

Regarded as a promising, new technology, BIM has been widely adopted for MEP projects as it has pre-construction, design and fabrication benefits. BIM provides MEP engineers with integrated, highly coordinated and internally consistent computable information about the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing system for planning, managing, decision-making and operating the facility. Using these offerings, designing a complicated structure can be done with ease, increased accuracy and efficiency. Since BIM allows creation of a virtual 3D model, it gives a better idea of the outcome of their systems before they are actually built.

The space for MEP systems is typically reserved before the MEP system is defined. Thus while designing a complex and a bigger size building, squeezing the MEP system into the building can sometimes become challenging. At such times, the 3D BIM model helps in collision detection – reducing the risk of construction cost overruns. A BIM model is an intelligent computable model and hence the ducts, pipes, walls and beams are actual defined entities and their functional relationships between building elements and systems is clear. This enables a holistic design approach which integrates not only the MEP disciplines, but the process as well – featuring an integrated digital environment for design, documentation and analysis.

BIM creates a virtual MEP model comprising of heating and cooling system, ducts and plant-room layout, electrical power and lightening layout, domestic water plumbing and gas piping system layout and fire protection system layout, thus offering a systematic and meticulous analysis of the system to be built. This analysis would help in increased efficiency, accuracy and coordination of the system reducing the time and cost involved in it.

BIM’s ability to digitally represent a building before it is actually built also allows firms to create, manage and share design information more effectively – resulting in increased profitability, reduced potential errors and risks and fewer inefficiencies in MEP building design. With the help of BIM, detailed views of mechanical, electrical and plumbing system are possible which will improve the quality of the overall project and ability to communicate the design intent.

Before jumping directly to MEP coordination services, I have a question. How true is the saying, ‘time is money’? If you ask me,I would rather put it as ‘time is much more than money.’ There is no denying the fact that you can earn money but you can’t buy time. So since the concept of time and money is already clear now, shifting the focus to the work industry isn’t it a great deal if you receive all your serviced on time. Of course yes. Coming to construction industry now it kills the person when he/she looks at the long schedules. It’s even more annoying if they get delayed.

But MEP coordination services are exceptionally helpful in reducing the delays in the project deliveries. The full form of MEP is mechanical, electrical and plumbing and these terms are sufficient enough for one to understand the kind of complexities involved in the designing of these systems.

How are MEP coordination services helpful in this case? Since we know already that the designs of these systems are very complex in nature it’s the time to proceed further and reduce these complexities. The one and only solution of this problem is the coordination of MEP systems.

The process of coordination: So the MEP coordination can be started once the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers design and model their respective systems such as mechanical engineer should have his HVAC model with him. If the engineers are ready with their design and model they can coordinate their models together to check if the different systems can find their proper places in harmony. During coordination process the engineers come across with interference’s and clashes that occur between the systems.

So when the clashes are detected by engineers they work together to find the appropriate solution for the problems and the space is created for the independent existence of the MEP systems. The overall process of clash detection and haunt for its resolution influences the project positively. When the clashes are solved on time it reduces the rework during the actual construction process. Had these not been detected on time it could have taken extra amount of time later on. In other words coordination process saves a lot of time.

Compared to architectural and structural disciplines, the M&E services domain is typically more fragmented with a two tier design system being established in the sector. In an MEP services project, the key participants include the MEP design consultant (also known as the MEP Design Engineer) and the MEP contractor (which includes respective trade sub-contractors). MEP design consultants and MEP contractors have distinct responsibilities. In an ideal scenario, the MEP consultant remains responsible for developing the MEP design (known as the design-intent) and the contractor takes the role of, spatial coordination (which can be construed as detailed design in some respects) as well as procurement and then managing the fabrication and installation process.

In M&E BIM as well as conventional MEP CAD drafting approaches, the design consultant receives the architectural and structural design drawings/model from the respective parties during his design tenure for the project – the nature of ‘design’ in the industry means that several versions will be passed across to the design engineer while he is expected to continue with his design. His/her design-intent is intended to work (spatially that is) with the architectural and structural drawings/models but due to time and financial constraints of the project the MEP consultant’s drawings when passed to the MEP contractor will typically not have enough detail to allow installation i.e. the pre-fabrication and installation details required for installation. The MEP (M&E) contractor will then use his/her skills, knowledge, technical product data and other design data to create a services model that is clash free and that allows efficient installation, ease of fabrication and post-installation access and maintenance.

The MEP contractor will have created MEP pre-fabrication models/drawings and installation layouts that feature enough detail required to coordinate the services within allocated spaces; prefabricate racks, modules, and assemblies with efficient runs; and carry out installation without on-field re-work. To achieve this, the MEP contractor will change consultant issue drawings drastically in some cases. When one considers that he may typically resize ductwork, split electrical ladder, use completely new equipment and re-route pipework if necessary, not to mention changes required due to lagging, insulation allowances, easy access to maintainable parts and hanging of services, then it is clear that whilst the design-intent may have been in place, the final design (which will still need to be approved by the design consultant) will change significantly.

To anyone else, and certainly to those in the structural or architectural sector where there may be concept development, design development and construction documentation phases, this effort from a contractor may constitute ‘design’ as it is in effect further detailing of the initial design. However, in the building services sector this is not referred to as design as the design itself is not affected according to the parties concerned. The MEP contractor is actually extending or progressing the design to create coordinated construction drawings.

So, while MEP design and design detailing may well continue beyond the drawings/models provided by the MEP consultant it is not called ‘design’ but is known as co-ordination or to be more exact ‘installation ready, spatial coordination’.

The advent of BIM, which is also being utilised by consultants, is seeing greater levels of design detailing in the industry with that MEP consultants (MEP designers) now undertaking more of the drawing role. The nature of 3D modelling implies some consideration for spatial coordination must exist and it is certainly true that consultants are now paying more attention to the creation of detailed design and therefore more spatial coordination. The question remains whether the consultant’s models can be used by installers.

The two tier design (intent) and design detailing (coordination) environment may continue to exist for the foreseeable future which in turn may continue to present timing and financial challenges in an industry where financial control and project deadlines remain fundamental for the industry.

MEP drawings play a significant role in the Architectural, Engineering and Construction industry. 2d and 3D MEP diagrams help to plan projects in a perfect way depicting the exact location of all fixtures, switches and controls for electrical distribution. Moreover, 2d MEP drawings provide the details of elements in an HVAC system, including ducting, venting and other equipment. Besides, waste lines, plumbing supply, fixtures and valves are represented in the sketches.

If you are looking for 2D MEP drawing services, contact a team of proficient engineers who could assist you in producing coordinated shop drawings. You may also appoint a BIM service provider who can help you get construction documents from the information provided into the models. BIM Models represent the most detailed illustrations, showing every component with technical info.

Often 2D MEP drawings are released with information about the floor plans with system sizes for scaling, schematic illustration for ensuring service continuity with design intent and also Riser sizes with branch connections. In addition, enlarged illustrations containing specific installation details and equipment schedule mock-ups are available from the sketches. Furthermore, penetration sketches or block out diagrams containing structural openings are coordinated with Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing requirements.

When various systems are required to be installed, the MEP coordinated diagrams ensure that every contractor gets a place for his system. The coordinated 2D and 3D MEP drawings match up the requirement of every system installer for ensuring that everything is installed in a proper manner. This provides a clear action plan for every system contractor and lets the contractors prevent problems arising during construction. The 2D and 3D MEP diagrams are also used for prefabricated components such as elevators, trusses, windows, steel, cabinets, mill-work, appliances and air handling units required by the MEP contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and fabricators.

MEP drawings are also called shop drawings that include the drawn version of info in the construction document. As a result of which, shop drawings provide more information compared to the construction documents. MEP shop drawings focusing on a specific product offer a different style than architectural drawings. There are various utilities of MEP shop drawings, including technical diagrams of electrical components, composite sketches, underground coordination, above-ceiling coordination, sheet metal & pipe fabrication diagrams, HVAC & duct work drawings and several others.

It’s of no doubt that the MEP shop drawings are now a part and parcel of the construction industry. Nowadays, most of the construction firms make use of Building Information Modeling services. This is because BIM helps to save time and cost of construction. Coordinated 2D MEP shop drawings improve the quality of construction and also its productivity through improved off-site fabrication, better plans and well-informed team. Effective coordination diagrams help to identify the potential problems before fabrication or installation on the construction site. This helps in viewing the building project as a whole rather than as separate sketches.

Revit is a useful tool in the AEC industry since it was introduced. It has effectively enabled organisations to minimise the possible on-site concerns and helped to lower the overall project cost. Revit MEP covers of all of the main services including ductwork modelling which is the subject of this particular article and specifically how it is used for modelling and how it is now being used for fabrication.

Focusing firstly on ductwork as a discipline, ductwork is a core feature of MEP design projects as it facilitates heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) for regulating the air flow and to maintain acceptable indoor air quality as well as thermal comfort.

Duct work essentially comes in three types of shape – circular, elliptical and rectangular and they are designed to be fitted at varied elevation levels. Revit has provided an array of options in its latest update for design ductwork models, yet there are many challenges when modelling ductwork in Revit. Ductwork is unique in design for each of the structures and all element expose different challenges while designing. BIM services modellers must create ductwork models to accommodate customised frames, windows, fittings and complex routings. Specific outlets are also required to be designed for ductwork to fit in the outlets as well as to leave adequate space for electrical and plumbing requirements.

As well as different shapes, ductwork has to modelled in different sizes as well, to suit the design requirements along with the factors such as flow of air and mode of discharge or exhaust. An oversized duct may pose design challenges such as failing to accommodate the electrical and plumbing requirements and under sized duct may result in a serious design flaw and may not be able to hold the desired amount of air flow. Ductwork modellers typically model to a high level of detail (LOD), typically at LOD 300 and increasingly at LOD 350.

Although it is only a component of MEP design ductwork modelling does require expert inputs and precise layout plans to create a clash free duct network for building and engineering projects. This can seamlessly accommodate plumbing and electrical lines without causing costly design changes at construction level. Pre-Revit, the industry used AutoCAD MEP, a 3D tool, as well as other specialist tools and add-ons such as CAD Duct to create ductwork models. When Revit was introduced it had a number of shortfalls and incomplete areas for mechanical services and indeed for ductwork. However later versions have addressed earlier shortfalls and the tool is at a stage where it can be used for detailed design to address the challenges and requirements detailed above but also for interfacing with fabrication level detail, which will be discussed further below.

As well as modelling capability, Revit also provides other advantages such as providing quantity take-offs at an early stage, which helps to avoid costly design changes in the later part of the design process and provides accurate quantities for ductwork, insulation and other materials. Even though seamless ductwork models are prepared using Revit, the functionality of the design files across other platforms had remained limited. For instance, when the ductwork model files designed in Revit had to be used for fabrication purposes on related software, due to its incompatibility on these softwares, the duct layouts had to be re-modelled leading to time delays and a more expensive fabrication process, resulting in fabrication errors which can have negative implications while assembling the ductwork.

To overcome the limitations for fabrication, Autodesk updated Revit features for ductwork modelling in its latest version – Revit 2017. Revit 2017 now has tools to design duct fabrication which are included within the package. This enables designers and modellers to create the ductwork models, layouts and designs for the entire project lifecycle, including fabrication teams. The files which have wider compatibility for fabrication tools such as FABMEP help designers and modellers to design ductwork seamlessly over various platforms and save the project in a single file without affecting the actual design. Historically, this level of interoperability has not been experienced from design, detailing and finally through to fabrication and in the future – facilities management.

In summary, Revit MEP is an established tool for ductwork modeling and it does address the core elements of a ductwork system and allow a reasonably sound set of design drawings to be issued. The challenge for fabrication from Revit was always a concern and as briefly discussed, Autodesk have now started to address this and we are seeing fabrication interoperability at last. Added to this is the fact that Revit is working more closely with fabrication tools in its own right and therefore the fabrication (manufacturing) industry is now starting adoption of Revit models in a way that has not previously been experienced. The end game will surely mean accurate designs, delivered faster and therefore more efficiently – helping to reduce costs and improve timescales in the engineering and building industry.

The MEP consulting companies in Dubai has a lot to grapple with. Uncertainty continues to spread through the GCC as low oil prices result in governments cutting back on capital spending. Then there are the uncertainties on a geopolitical level which threaten to destabilise the entire region.

MEP consultants in Dubai are operating under increasingly intense pressure. Are clients demanding more for less? Are MEP consultants being paid their fees on time? Are they able to retain and also attract the right calibre of staff? Is the much talked about construction boom in relation to Dubai Expo 2020? How MEP consultants in Dubai tackle these questions and many more will shape their fortunes in the region this year and beyond.

Putting together any sort of ‘listing’ feature is a fraught process. The challenges stem partly from the intangible nature of what we are trying to measure: namely influence, and are then compounded by the quality of information we can draw upon. Most of it is inconsistent, incomplete and entirely unverifiable; making it much harder to draw a like for like comparison between different MEP companies.

Some MEP companies failed to respond, others declined to participate, some pulled out at the last minute and most firms didn’t complete all fields of our questionnaire. Our form was designed to create a level playing field – as much as possible we wanted to be comparing apples with apples. Our initial focus area was on revenues achieved, trying as much as possible to separate global and regional sums. However, that alone failed to provide an accurate measuring stick across all MEP companies. Consequently, we also looked at the team size of the operation, asking about the number of MEP and BIM engineers based in the region, as well as the number of GCC nationals and women working at the company.

Other information was requested, including recent project wins, the profit of the company as a percentage of company revenue, the amount a firm has invested in training in the last 12 months, the areas it has invested in, and how the company has embraced sustainable business practices. Overall the results have been fascinating and it is a shame that we don’t have the pages available to reproduce all the information we received. The published results are dependent on the quality of information we received.

Those MEP companies that were more open tended to fair better on the list. In the absence of locally available listed information, an element of subjective judgement in the listing becomes inevitable. If you don’t agree with the list please feel free to get in touch.
